Defining the Classics

Defining the Classics

Some things don’t follow the trend cycle, they define it.

There’s something about a leather jacket. A presence. A weight. Both literal and symbolic. A leather jacket doesn't just complete an outfit, it sets the tone. Sharp but relaxed. Simple but significant. Cool, always. The best ones don’t try too hard. They don’t have to. And the even better ones somehow seem to gain more character over time.

At Barneys Originals, we’ve built our foundations on this idea: that a leather jacket isn’t just a fashion item, it’s a constant. Worn by many, reinvented by few, and never truly replaced. And so, we're celebrating what we call Classics Week. A whole week devoted to celebrating those pieces that sit at the heart of our collections. The ones that feel like old favourites from the moment you put them on. The ones you trust to make whatever else you’re wearing look like intentional.

But how do you define what makes a jacket classic? Not just popular, or timely - genuinely timeless.

What makes a leather a true classic?

It starts with the material. The shape has to be right. And by “right,” we don’t mean stiff or restrictive. Comfort from the first wear isn't just something we say, it's about selecting the right leather for the job. Unstructured suede, roughed up buffalo, lightweight sheep nappa - there's no one size fits all in this realm.

The bomber jacket, with its roots in military design, has long outgrown its utilitarian beginnings. Now it’s worn oversized, low-slung, zipped or unzipped, over everything from a tailored trouser to a midi dress. It’s the jacket that says “I didn’t overthink this” — and means it.

Then there’s the racer. Neat, minimal, no-nonsense. Popularised by motorcyclists and later adopted by the style-conscious crowds of the late 90s and early 00s. The leather racer remains a go-to for people who like their outerwear clean and classic. Less “statement,” more staple. It slips seamlessly into a modern wardrobe, whether worn zipped up with wide-leg denim or thrown over a hoodie on your way out the door.

And of course, the biker. Who could forget? The icon. The rebel. The romantic. A shape that’s been worn and re-worn across generations: Marlon Brando in The Wild One. Madonna in the 80s. Winona Ryder in the 90s. Rihanna in the 00s. Few other items of clothing share such history - save for maybe denim jeans. We're endlessly surprised by the biker jacket's endearing nature. In particular, our washed leather biker and ribbed sleeve biker have historically been a best-seller across our direct website and wholesale partners. We joke about how there must be a Clara or Victoria jacket in every British postcode by now!

Across all of these styles, one thing stays consistent: good leather. There’s a reason we stick to sheep leather across our core collection. It’s soft but durable, flexible without feeling flimsy, and it breaks in beautifully. Over time, it takes on its own character; a subtle patina, a familiar feel, a few memories in the lining. Isn't that what a true classic should do? Not just hold up, but hold meaning. Sure, we're getting a little sentimental, but leather is kind of our thing so let us have a moment please!

Versatility in styling

There’s no single way to style a classic leather jacket. We say this often, but it's true. Besides, that’s the beauty of it. A true iconic piece moulds to its surroundings, never looking out of place.

You’ll see our leathers layered over vintage tees, tailored shirts, chunky knits, bodycon dresses, band merch, office wear - and sometimes even the occasional wedding dress! They suit minimalists and maximalists alike. They work for people who want to blend in and for those who dress like a main character on a weekday.

What matters is how it feels. That final layer you throw on before stepping outside. That extra bit of confidence when your outfit needs grounding. The quiet edge that says you know what you’re doing, even if you got dressed in a rush.

In a culture of fast-moving trends and weekly drops, there’s something quietly powerful about choosing something timeless. Investing in something that doesn’t rely on hype. Wearing something that looks just as good today as it would have in 1997 — or 1987, or even further back.

Classics Week is our way of reminding you that some things don’t need to be reimagined to be relevant. The bomber, the racer, the biker — these jackets have already proven themselves. They're the backbone of our menswear and womenswear collections for a reason. Not because they're safe, but because they’re sure. Reliable. Effortlessly wearable. Built with intent. Made to last.

These jackets don’t shout. They don’t chase attention. They just 'belong'; in every wardrobe, every decade, every version of you.

Leather is forever. And that’s exactly why we still wear it.
